Microsoft: Surface 2, Pro 2 'Close To Selling Out'

Surface 2 Alt
Less than two weeks after Microsoft launched the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2, the follow-up tablets are flying off the digital shelves - at least according to Redmond.
A Friday post on the Microsoft Developer Twitter feed said that the "Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 are close to selling out."
Just exactly what that means is unclear: Redmond has not released details about how many next-gen devices have been built or sold. Did it make a million or only a few hundred?
Microsoft followers might recall that the company also said that its 32GB Surface RT tablet sold out back in Oct. 2012, knocking shipments back three weeks.
Earlier this summer, however, we learned that Surface revenue was $853 million between Oct. 2012 and June 2013. That might not seem too shabby, but Microsoft also incurred a $900 million charge for Surface RT inventory adjustments, and boosted advertising costs for Windows 8 and the Surface by $898 million.

According to May data from IDC, Microsoft shipped 900,000 Surface tablets during the first quarter, with reports of 1.5 million sold between October and March. For comparison, Apple sold 14.6 million iPads last quarter.
Recent regulatory filings, meanwhile, revealed that outgoing Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer had his bonus docked in part being of lackluster Surface sales.
The Microsoft Web store currently shows that the 64GB Surface 2, as well as the 256GB and 512GB Pro 2 versions will ship four to eight days after their intended release date.
The Surface 2 has a Tegra 4 processor from Nvidia and arrives on Oct. 22 sporting Windows RT 8.1. It has 25 percent more battery life than its predecessor and is "thinner, faster, and brighter" than the original Surface RT, Redmond said. The Surface 2's touch display also has less reflectivity than the first-generation slate and the new tablet now supports USB 3.0.
The Surface Pro 2, meanwhile, is being billed as a full-blown, workstation-quality business product. Microsoft's new Intel-based tablet will ship with Windows 8.1 and it now has a docking station accessory that can support a 3,840-by-2,160-resolution desktop monitor.
Consumers can head to the Microsoft Web store to pre-order a 32GB ($449) or 64GB ($549) Surface 2, or splurge on the swankier Pro 2, available in 64GB ($899), 128GB ($999), 256GB ($1,299), and 512GB ($1,799) flavors.
But tiny tablet enthusiasts may want to hold out on buying a Windows-based device. According to PCMag sister site Geek.com, Surface vice president Panos Panay recently suggested that a "Surface Mini" is in the works. During a visit to the Seattle Microsoft Store, Panay explained that the team "is working on many different resolutions and screen sizes as potential future tablet PCs," though that likely won't happen before the 2013 holiday season.

iOS 7: Six Things Apple Got Right and Six That Are Still Missing

Despite how much people claim to like change, at the core we are creatures of habit. Just as we saw when Facebook introduced Timeline and as we will see when Twitter makes its next significant change, people are going to get up in arms about it. Apple’s iOS 7 was no different.
Described as the biggest change to iOS since the introduction of the iPhone, iOS 7 has been available to the general public for roughly two weeks at this point. That’s given everyone plenty of time to get accustomed to all of the changes and vent about them, but for us, it’s served as an evaluation period.
Looking beyond the flat UI and the animated background, has that much really changed in Apple’s mobile OS? What did Cupertino get right with the update and what areas or features are still missing? To help answer these questions, I’ve put together a list of the top six things that are still missing in iOS 7 as well as the six things that Apple nailed with the update.

The Good

1
Control Center
Control Center is one of the best additions to iOS 7 even if it is a shamefaced adoption from Android. The panel provides quick access to toggle features like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Airplane Mode as well as sliders to adjust volume and screen brightness. There are even shortcuts to useful apps like Clock, Calculator and Flashlight.
To access Control Center, just swipe up from the bottom of the screen.
2
Block contacts
It’s about time Apple implemented a way to block unwanted communications. There are two methods to block offending callers in iOS 7. If someone is already in your address book, simply tap on their profile, scroll to the bottom of the list and select Block this Caller. You can also add numbers to the block list by going to Settings > Phone > Blocked.
Blocked contacts will not be able to call, send messages or initiate a FaceTime video chat.
3
Timestamps in Messages
Timestamps in Messages aren’t exactly new as iOS 6 offered similar functionality. The problem, however, was that the OS would selectively provide timestamps – like when a new conversation was started or after a long period of silence.
With iOS 7, that’s no longer an issue. Simply swipe to the left while in a conversation to see when each message was sent or received. It’s convenient that it the timestamps aren’t always there to serve as a distraction but can be accessed on-the-fly.
4
New Icons
I was unsure whether or not to list this as a positive or negative as people seem to be split pretty evenly across the board. I ultimately see it as a pro simply because A) the old layout and icons were extremely outdated and B) Apple is teasing live apps.
If you haven’t already noticed, the Clock app icon now serves as a watch face. Sure, it’s a little gimmicky and not entirely useful since there is a clock at the top of the screen but if Apple opens such functionality up to developers, we could see all sorts of things like live weather feeds directly on an icon without having to open the app.
We’ll keep our fingers crossed on this one.
5
Improved multitasking
Multitasking has been around on Apple devices since iOS 4 but it was really limited. Developers now have a bit more freedom in iOS 7 and the interface to switch between apps is greatly improved. The new system, similar to the jailbreak tweak Auxo, uses a card-based interface to see which apps are open and lets you get rid of them with a simple swipe up.
Along the same lines, a new feature called Background App Refresh allows apps to refresh their content or use Location Services in the background. The feature is enabled by default although some (Apple included) say turning it off could improve battery life.

6
Automatic updates
Previous versions of iOS would alert a user when a new update was available for an app with a small badge on the icon. The gesture was nice but it also meant you had to manually update everything. Not anymore.
With iOS 7, app updates take place automatically in the background. The setting seems to be disabled by default so if you’d like to turn it on, navigate to Settings > iTunes and App Store and slide the slider for Automatic Downloads: Updates to the “on” position.

The Bad (or Still Missing)

1
Landscape orientation for all
Apple’s iPad works in landscape orientation under almost every usage scenario, so why doesn’t the iPhone get the same treatment?
I’ve used both devices and can say it’s rather annoying to be restricted to entering a passcode and navigating the home screen on the iPhone in portrait mode only. Sure, it’s a minor inconvenience and one can get to where they want to go even when looking at things sideways but it shouldn’t have to be that way. It wouldn’t take a ton of work on the UI side to allow landscape orientation phone-wide even with the iPhone’s limited real estate.
2
Different default apps
One can’t help but notice that Apple still doesn’t allow users to select a third-party app as a default app. Don’t like Safari? Tough, you’re stuck with it as you can’t replace it with Chrome as your default browsing app. Not a fan of Mail? You’re out of luck again as you can’t set another program like Mailbox as your default client.
From a marketing and strategy standpoint, it makes sense – Apple wants you to use their apps, not someone else’s. But from a user’s perspective, the freedom to use Chrome as default over Safari or Google Maps over Apple’s own app shouldn’t be out of reach.
3
“Select All” option in e-mail app
I’ve had the same e-mail address for several years and as such, I tend to receive a lot of messages each day. It’s not uncommon to get 100+ e-mails a day after spam filtering which is why it’s so annoying to check my e-mail on an iOS device. Why? Because there is no easy way to delete multiple messages.
It’s beyond me how such a basic function has eluded iOS for so long. If you want to delete multiple e-mail messages, you have tap Edit then methodically select each and every message for deletion. A “Select All” feature would be extremely easy to implement and save people like me a lot of time and frustration.
4
Custom keyboards
While it’s true that the keyboard in iOS 7 has undergone some under-the-hood improvements and even a visual makeover (but __why__ remove the .com button?), users still don’t have the ability to use true third-party keyboards. Android users have enjoyed access to popular third-party boards like SwiftKey for some time and we think it’s about time that Tim Cook and company open up the platform to allow for third-party keyboards.
Earlier this year at the D11 conference, Cook promised to open the platform up a bit more but “not to the degree that we put the customer at risk of having a bad experience.” That’s understandable as there would no doubt be some third-party keyboard apps that would offer a bad experience but the potential for some really great keyboards far outweighs the negatives in my opinion.
5
Greater home screen widget control
Or rather, any control at all. Look, I get it. Just as with the custom keyboard argument, Apple doesn’t want to run the risk of having people turn their home screen into a gaudy MySpace profile. But a little more flexibility in the home screen widget department would go a long way in making the overall experience seem a bit more custom-fit for each user.
I suspect Apple will loosen the reins a bit more over time but Android-like home screen customization likely isn’t in the cards.
6
Can’t remove Apple bloatware
The inability to remove pre-loaded Apple software continues in iOS 7. In the event you don’t use apps like Newsstand or Passbook, you’re stuck with them as there is no way to delete them. We’ve seen this on other phones and operating system and it’ll likely continue but truth be told, it’s annoying. Apple should let users uninstall these apps. If you need them again, simply grab them from the App Store.
Until that day comes, you’re stuck with burying these unused apps in a folder and forgetting they ever existed.

How to Repair Your iPad Touch Screen

The Apple iPad, iPad 2 and iPad 3 are very sophisticated devices. You just have to open them up and take a look inside the sleekly designed tablet to see how the amazing brain of the device functions. One must be very careful, as sturdy as they feel it just takes one harsh drop or impact and the touchscreen may shatter. What happens when this dreaded occasion occurs? Well you can either take your iPad to a repair specialists or you could have an attempt at repairing it yourself. Warning, this is not for the faint hearted.
Repairing the iPad yourself
I will focus on the iPad 2 as it is the trickiest, and if you can replace a touchscreen on the iPad 2, the others are a breeze. It is best to start at the bottom right corner about 5 cm in from the corner. I find the best tool to use is a narrow paint scrapper or a flat scalpel (The scalpel is more risky as it can easily cut important cables and I advise the paint scrapper if it is your first time.) You will also need a heat gun or hairdryer to heat the screen whilst you remove it. This helps to melt the glue on the inside. Be careful not to overheat the screen as it can damage the LCD underneath.
Be careful as the Wifi cable is glued to the inside of the touchscreen about an inch to the right of the home button. You need to slowly lift the touchscreen away from the casing and detach the cable from the touchscreen. Remember not to damage the plastic bezel around the outside of the touchscreen. You can replace it, but if you are careful you can easily fit your opening tool between the bezel and touchscreen.
Slowly move your opening tool around the iPad in an anti-clockwise motion while heating. The next danger zone is the volume/on-off flex cable in the top right hand corner of the screen. Work very slowly around this area as to not damage this cable; this is the cable that most technicians still manage to break every now and then. If your iPad is the 3G model then you need to detach both the Bluetooth and 3G modules at the top either side of the camera glued on the inside of the touchscreen.
All you have to do is now loosen the bottom left corner and pull the touchscreen away as if you are opening a book. Do this very slowly to pull the adhesive away. The touchscreen flex cable is on the left near the bottom, be careful not to pull too hard on the cable as it still needs to be disconnected from the main board. You can now loosen all four screws around the LCD and once again lift the LCD out as if you are opening a book as the connector for the LCD is on the left. Disconnect the LCD using the thin gold clip and pull it out the board. You can now disconnect the touchscreen and remove.
You now need to take note how the home button and camera are glued onto the touchscreen and replicate it on the replacement screen. Remove all glass and adhesive from the frame. The best adhesive is the 3M double sided tape that is pre-cut out for the iPad. The trickiest part is to fold the cable inside the casing so it does not stop the touchscreen from sitting flush. Have a look at the old one to see how it folds.
Taking it to an out of warranty repair centre
The second option is to find a third party repair centre. Service centres such as these have done this repair hundreds of times and are well equipped to do a quality job. Things you do have to consider are; does the service centre offer an in house warranty, this generally illustrates their confidence in their work. Some service centres can also take weeks to repair a device, this job shouldn't take longer than a day or two.
You can also search the reputation of the repair centre on website such as hellopeter and view how many compliments and complaints the company in question has.
Take the iPad back to Apple
The last possibility is to take the iPad back to Apple. What Apple normally does in these cases is they replace the device at the customers' expense and offer a 15% - 20% discount on a new device.
The upside to this scenario is getting a brand new device including a brand new warranty, the obvious down side to this situation is the cost involved in having to purchase a new device even though the discount offered is fairly substantial.
Ryan Frey is a professional Apple technician and has repaired hundreds of devices, if you require advice or guidance on replacing your touchscreen, spares or an expert repair man check out the services here

Unlock Your Phone Guide

What is phone unlocking?

Unlocking your phone simply means that you can use it on networks (also known as carriers or operators) other than your own. So for example, if you are currently locked into a contract with Vodafone UK, you could unlock your phone and make calls through Orange UK.

Every phone contains a small removable chip called a SIM card. The SIM card contains a unique number which links your phone to your network. The network then usually 'locks' your phone, meaning that no other SIM card will work in your phone. You might think there isn't much point in unlocking, but it can bring quite a few benefits.

So, what are the benefits of unlocking?

Once your phone is unlocked from your network, there are number of possibilities and benefits as follows:

  • Save money with other networks – You will be able to use other networks to make cheaper calls, send cheaper texts or use a cheaper data plan. You can simply insert another network's SIM card (either temporarily or permanently)
  • Travelling abroad / Roaming – Using other networks while abroad can save you on average 75% compared to the roaming rate charged by your network. Networks are well known for charging very high rates for calls or data while abroad. If your phone is unlocked you can buy cheap throwaway SIM cards from the country you're visiting. You can also keep your SIM, but connect to other (cheaper) networks that you wouldn't normally have access to
  • Multiple bands – Some phones, such as dual, tri or quad-band phones, are capable of using different networks while abroad, however your own network may be blocking access to this feature. By unlocking, you can use any network while you're away from home and they will often be cheaper than your own. For example if you take your locked Cingular phone to the United Kingdom it won't detect some UK networks. If your phone is unlocked however, these networks will be accessible
  • Increase the resale value – If you upgrade your phone and no longer need the old one, then you are free to sell it. Unlocked phones are worth up to 300% more than locked phones, meaning it's a great investment
  • Cheaper deals and tariffs – If your phone is unlocked and you see a promotional deal, or better tariff on another network, then you can put in another SIM card and use that. That's assuming you're not locked into a 12, 18 or 24 month contract, in which case you can still use the other network, but you will still have to pay for the original contract
  • Use other SIMs – This can sometimes be handy. For example, you may have run out of credit on your phone. You could use someone else's SIM card in your phone to make calls through their network. Or perhaps a friend may be having problems with their phone. You could put their SIM card in your phone to test if the problem is phone related or network related
  • Use dual SIM adapters – once unlocked, you can purchase a dual SIM adapter allowing you to switch between two networks on one phone
  • Unlock once only – once your phone is unlocked, you never need to do it again

Is unlocking the same as jailbreaking?

Not exactly. If you own an iPhone, then there is something similar to unlocking called Jailbreaking. Whilst you can Jailbreak your phone yourself, we strongly recommend getting it done safely and professionally. The leading method is through Jailbreakunlock.org who provide great support and the process is complete reversible. We also have a useful Jailbreak Guide if you want to find out more.

Why do networks lock phones?

The only reason for phones to be locked is to ensure that you stay with your network for a certain period of time. If your phone is unlocked, you are less likely to leave and choose another provider.

Don't believe what your network representative tells you about your subsidised phone costing them a lot of money. They get significant discounts from phone manufacturers and make a very healthy profit from your monthly contract and call/text/data charges.

Maybe my phone is already unlocked. How do I check?

The quickest way to check if your phone is unlocked is to put someone else's SIM card in your phone (whether their phone is unlocked or not). If you can make calls with that SIM card, then you don't need to unlock your phone and you can probably stop reading!

What are the risks of unlocking?

Your network might not like you – If you ask your network's sales representative about unlocking, they may tell you that it's illegal (which is untrue), that you void your warranty (which is untrue if the unlocking is done properly) or that it can't be done (it can be, otherwise you wouldn't be reading this guide). These are often mis-truths that are told to protect their revenues.

There are, however, some risks to watch out for if unlocking isn't done properly:
  • A permanently locked phone – most phones will allow you to try unlocking three times. If you fail on the third attempt, your phone will be permanently locked to your network, with no chance of trying again
  • Loss of data – Some unreliable unlock codes work by exploiting the phone's software. This can sometimes mean losing all of your data like your contacts, messages, emails, apps and so on.
  • Warranty issues – If you don't unlock through a reputable company, you can void your warranty. This means that if you have any issues with your phone, neither your network nor your manufacturer will fix the problem
  • Bricked phone – In a lot of cases, especially using free codes off the internet, the unlock code can render your phone completely useless. This is more common that you might think, so be very careful

So, how do I unlock my phone properly?

We have done a fair bit of research to make this guide and the most reputable site around is currently Globalunlock.com. Their unique selling point is that they have a direct relationship with phone manufacturers which guarantees 1) the code will work and 2) you won't void your warranty

There are other lesser well-known companies that provide unlock codes, so feel free to have a hunt around, but be very careful as there are an equal number of scam websites. As with many things online, you can usually tell how trustworthy a site is by their design. If a site looks like it been thrown together in a couple of days, then don't go near it or you will risk damaging your phone.

Can't I do it myself?

Yes, you can if you can find a working unlock code. These can be found on the internet for free, but it can be a bit like finding a needle in a haystack and the risks are high that you could 'brick' your phone if you get the wrong code (as explained in the risks above).

How do I find these free codes?

To find free codes, start by typing in your phone's make and model into Google with the words "free phone unlocking code".

Be very careful though - a lot of unlocking sites come and go or they are of very poor quality. Most of them will promote free unlocking, but then eventually take you to some dodgy payment system. There is the odd genuinely helpful site, but unfortunately the scammers have taken over Google's search results pages, so you will really have to do some digging.

We would recommend the two sites above though to be on the safe side. Spending a few more dollars, pounds or euros is a small price to pay for not bricking your phone.

Do I need to download or install any software?

No software is necessary. You just need an unlocking code. Don't believe anyone or any website that says you need software to unlock your phone. The exception is to Jailbreak iPhones, but this is different to unlocking. See Jailbreakunlock.org for more information on Jailbreaking.

Is unlocking legal?

Yes – it is totally legal. Phone companies may tell you that it isn't, but that is simply a sales tactic because they're afraid you might use your phone on a competitor's network.

Are you sure?

Yes, however there is something similar called unblocking. That IS illegal. Unblocking is when you make a phone work after it has been blocked. Phones may be blocked if they have been stolen or lost. Unlocking and unblocking are two totally different things

Will unlocking void my warranty?

This depends on how you unlock the phone. If you use a trusted company like Globalunlock.com, then they will guarantee your warranty isn't voided

If you do it yourself, use a disreputable website or take it some small phone shop in town, then you may have warranty issues if you need to get your phone repaired in the future

Will I keep the same number?

Yes you will. Unlocking does not affect your phone number. Unless of course you put another SIM card in your phone, then the number will change while that SIM is in your phone.

Ok, what do I need before I unlock my phone?

You will need four pieces of information before you acquire your unlock code:

1) Your IMEI or ESN number
The number will be in the format: AA-BBBBBB-CCCCCC-D or AABBBBBBCCCCCCD

There are a number of ways to find this code. Start with the first (easiest):

- From your phone's dialing screen dial *#06# The number that appears will be your IMEI number

- If that doesn't work, look through your phone's menu for a "Help" or "About" screen and try and find the "IMEI number" or "IMEI code". For iPhone users, here is a useful guide to help you: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1267

- The IMIE number may also be printed on the outside casing of your phone at the back

- If all of those fail, then the number should also be found on the 'compliance plate' which will usually be located under your battery or inside the battery compartment area. It usually looks like a white sticker with some numbers and codes. Look for a 15-digit number in the format above

2) Your handset make and model
For example: Blackberry Torch 9800

3) Your network / network
For example: Vodafone UK or Sprint US

4) Country
The country that you live in (or more accurately, the country that your network is in)
